June 05, 2025

OnePlusmade a big splash atQualcomm‘s Tech Summit this week, when it was announced that the Chinese brand would be first tooffer a Snapdragon 855 device. But the manufacturer also revealed that it’s one of many brands working on a 5G smartphone for 2019.

Now, CEO Pete Lau has toldThe Vergethat we can expect the 5G model to be significantly more expensive than its other smartphones.

“It’s hard to know because there’s a lot of specifics still to look at, but it’s likely in the neighborhood of $200-300 more,” Lau told the outlet via a translator.

It makes for an interesting turn of affairs, as OnePlus has earned a reputation for more affordable flagship phones. Then again, the brand has been graduallyincreasing its pricesover the years. Nevertheless, this doesn’t necessarily mean that its other phones will see a big price bump. 5G phones require a lot more research and development than current 4G devices, although we don’t know if that necessitates a $200 to $300 price increase.

The Vergequizzed Qualcomm president Cristiano Amon on Lau’s comments, with Amon saying that he’s seen some brands be “way more aggressive” on pricing. So if you’re hoping to buy a 5G phone in 2019, you might want to wait and see before clicking the pre-order button on the Chinese brand’s device.
