Is LG ditching the G series? Here’s what the company has to say

LGhas responded to claims that the company is ditching its G series branding after a Korean outlet reported the news.
In an emailed response toAndroid Authority’squery, LG’s Global Communications Director Ken Hong said: “There are many proposals being batted around and when it’s time to announce our strategy for our next device,Android Authoritywill hear that directly from us, not through the Korean media.”
Last week,The Korea Heraldreported that LG is looking to revamp its smartphone naming strategy. It noted that the company is planning to kill the G series brand name for its premium smartphones.

LG supposedly made its decision public at a meeting with South Korean mobile vendors. An unnamed official was quoted as saying: “For upcoming premium phones, the naming will focus on each model’s design or special feature.”
Nothing was said about retaining the ThinQ moniker though. In our opinion, it’s one of the worst additions to smartphone names in recent memory. It’s hard to pronounce and confusing. We wouldn’t mind seeing that go too.
What’s in a name?
We’re tired of poking fun atbad smartphone namesand LG of late has had some of the worst names for its phones.
Both LG’s G and V series have beenoverlapping significantly over the past few yearsand the common ThinQ branding makes it all the more confusing to distinguish between the two smartphone lines.
We hope LG streamlines its products in a more efficient way going forward and ditches either the G or V series lines to avoid overlapping.
The last major G series phone to launch was theLG G8X. We also expected theLG G9at MWC 2020, but the event wascancelledand we got theV60instead. Will the G9 eventually see the light of day? Let’s wait and watch.
