OnePlus 8 Pro could finally have great cameras with borrowed tech

August 09, 2025

OnePlusphones occasionally tend to borrowfeatures and/or design elementsfrom stablemate OPPO, and it looks like theOnePlus 8 Prowon’t be any different.

According toPricebabaand teen leakerIshan Agarwal, the OnePlus 8 Pro will gain the same 48MP main camera and 48MP ultra-wide sensor as theOPPO Find X2 Pro. That means we’re looking at the IMX689 sensor and IMX586 ultra-wide camera respectively.

The IMX689 is arguably Sony’s most capable camera sensor right now, offering larger individual pixels than other 48MP, 64MP, and108MPsensors. Noteworthy capabilities include pixel-binned shots equivalent to a 12MP 2.24 micron pixel camera, and All Pixel Autofocus for faster and more accurate focusing.

But the 48MPIMX586ultra-wide camera would be a welcome addition too, and should deliver better ultra-wide shots in low light owing to pixel-binning.

In other words, the OnePlus 8 Pro could have class-leading main and ultra-wide cameras on paper when it’s eventually released. Hopefully OnePlus’ camera software makes a big leap too, as that’s generally been the firm’s Achilles Heel.

For what it’s worth, our own David Imel thought the OPPO Find X2 Pro had “wonderful” cameras when he reviewed the phone earlier this month. More specifically, David said the main camera offered excellent color, detail, and sharpness. But he also praised the 48MP ultra-wide camera, saying colors and sharpness were “quite good,” and that it showed little distortion.

Other reported OnePlus 8 Pro cameras include an 8MP 3x telephoto camera with 30x digital zoom, and a 5MP “color filter.” Agarwal adds that the phone will also offer a Night Portrait Mode and “3-HDR” video.
