OnePlus drops OnePlus 7 into bucket of water, even without IP rating

August 07, 2025

The officialOnePlus Twitter accountjust published a short teaser video. The video shows what appears to be aOnePlus 7(or possiblyOnePlus 7 Pro) getting dropped into a bucket of water.

The video also says in the fine print that the device depicted does not havean IP ratingfor water resistance.

To date, no OnePlus device has had an official IP rating. The company’s usual defense for this omission (and the defenseCarl Pei givesfor this new device) is that IP certifications cost the company money, a cost which would then get passed on to the consumer. In other words, the company avoids IP ratings because it’s more important to keep its prices low.

The video, we assume, is meant to prove to consumers that just because the device isn’t IP certified doesn’t mean you can’t still dunk it into a bucket of water and have it be OK.

While it’s (sort of) clear what OnePlus is trying to get across with this teaser, it’s very unlikely that this will appease buyers who think IP ratings are important. IP ratings will assure buyers that the phone can handle certain things as proven not by the company selling the device, but by an impartial system (IP certification). That’s why IP ratings are so important to them.

This video depicts a phone getting dropped into a bucket of water. Even if the phone in the video comes out fine, if you were to do the same with your own OnePlus 7 — and it didn’t make it out alive — OnePlus can’t be held accountable for that. In fact, Carl Pei specifically saysnotto dunk your phone in a bucket of water inthis forum post.

What do you think of this video? Are you disappointed there won’t be an IP rating for the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro? Let us know in the comments.
