Samsung Galaxy Quantum 2 launched: A Galaxy A82 with better security?

After an abundance of leaks, Samsung has finally unveiled the Galaxy Quantum 2 in South Korea.
Visually, it resembles every recent mid-range Samsung smartphone. It is, however, the company’s second smartphone to pack a quantum random number generator (QRNG) chip. The new chip is smaller than the previous iteration mated to the firstGalaxy A Quantumsmartphone and generates “unpredictable and patternless” numbers using light. These figures can then be used for banking and other services. Korean carrierSK Telecombelieves this makes the device a tough nut to crack unless your phone falls into the wrong hands.
Beyond this development, the Samsung Galaxy Quantum 2 doesn’t really break much ground, nor does Samsung reveal much about the phone’s core specs. It sports a 6.7-inch display with a two-year-oldQualcomm Snapdragon 855 PlusSoC beneath. For imaging, the Quantum 2 relies on a 64MP primary shooter.
Is this the Samsung Galaxy A82?
Samsung Galaxy Quantum 2 sales will begin on April 23, but preorders are already live. Availability seems limited to South Korea for now, and considering the QRNG chips tie-in with many country-specific services, we don’t expect this phone to be available elsewhere.
There are indications that a variation of the Quantum 2 would launch internationally as theGalaxy A82. It sports the model number SM-A826 which lines up with the Galaxy A82’s identifier. There’s precedent for this too. The Galaxy A Quantum — sans the QRNG chip — launched globally as theGalaxy A71.
The official launch of the Quantum 2 may suggest the Galaxy A82’s debut isn’t too far off. But don’t expect it to pack any quantum security smarts when it does eventually arrive.
