July 11, 2025

Samsungrecently announced, viaXDA Developers, that it will release four new smartphones in the Samsung Galaxy J series sometime this month, specifically targeted at Indian consumers. The company is likely banking hard on these devices to win back their top spot in the country after losing it toXiaomilast year.

For years, Samsung held the number one spot on the list of smartphone manufacturers in India. While it still holds the title oftop smartphone maker globally, Xiaomi is actually the number one smartphone manufacturer in India right now, after knocking Samsung to second place inthe fourth quarter of 2017.

Xiaomi held onto the number one spot in the first quarter of 2018, as well. That means Samsung is going to have to fight hard to get back to the number one position.

Not much is known about these four new Galaxy J devices. However, we can confirm that the phones will feature Samsung’s “Infinity Display.” This is notable due to the fact that the Infinity Display has previously only been made available to Galaxy S, Galaxy Note, and Galaxy A series devices. That means that Samsung is bringing a high-end feature to a budget phone.

This is a good strategy for the company, certainly better than what it has tried to do to compete with Xiaomi so far. As recently as April this year, Samsung released a phone that was weaker in specs and more expensive than the comparable Xiaomi device. TheSamsung Galaxy J7 Duopriced at 16,990 rupees (~$252) while the similarXiaomi Redmi Note 5 Prosold for 14,999 rupees (~$223).

Finally, these Galaxy J phones will be made in India at Samsung’s facility in Noida, and feature “Made In India” branding. This will also likely help drive Indian sales of the new phones and help consumers choose Samsung over Xiaomi.

The Indian smartphone market is one of the fastest-growing and most essential markets to smartphone manufacturers. Samsung likely is placing the utmost importance on claiming back the top spot in the country from Xiaomi. We’ll have to wait to see how this pans out.
