Twitter’s automatic night mode theme is just glorious

August 21, 2025

Much to the surprise of early adopters everywhere, the latestAndroid N Developer Previewremoved the option to enable asystem-level dark mode. While that option is now gone from the System Tuner UI (hopefully only for the time being), developers still have the ability to add an automatic day/night mode to their apps that’s based on time and location.

It looks likeTwitteris now working on an automatic night mode for the official Android app. Right now it’s only available for alpha testers, though.

Twitter for Android dark theme

I’ve been using the alpha version for over a year now, and this change just popped up for me a day or two ago. I’m currently using version 5.112.0-alpha.423 of the Twitter app on myNexus 6, running on the Android N Developer Preview 3. As of right now, there’s no option to turn the feature on or off in the app’s settings menu. It automatically changes to dark mode at night, and back to the light version in the morning. The dark theme also turns on when I switch to Night Mode from my Nexus 6’s quick settings panel. When I turn Night Mode off from my device, the Twitter app goes back to the light version. Very cool.

Twitter’s Dark Mode is great. It features a dark blue/gray background all throughout the application, with white text and a sort of neon blue highlight color. The app looks and feels great, but since this is an alpha build there are bound to be some problems. The settings menu still features black text in Dark Mode, making most of the text next to impossible to read. Aside from that small caveat, I’m loving this new version.

One of the things keeping me from switching to the official Twitter app has been the lack of a proper dark theme, and it looks like we’re finally getting it.

Thoughts? Feelings? Now that Twitter is finally implementing a dark theme, do you think you’ll switch from your third-party Twitter app? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
