US apparently optimistic EU nations will block HUAWEI 5G rollout

The U.S. government believes E.U. countries are waking up to the threatHuawei’s 5G infrastructure poses, according toBloomberg.
In an article published yesterday,Bloombergquoted an anonymous official as saying “the U.S. anticipates that many nations will effectively bar the company’s equipment from their next-generation telecom networks.” The official said an outright ban on HUAWEI was unlikely to happen, however.
The official also didn’t name specific nations.
The U.S. has been rallying Western allies against HUAWEI, suggesting the Chinese tech firm’s ties to its governmentposes a security risk. The U.S. believes HUAWEI would be able to leverage its 5G mobile networks and devices to spy for the government. HUAWEI has denied any wrongdoing.
Should E.U. nations join the U.S. in blocking HUAWEI’s infrastructure, the move could help the States in its trade war with China. HUAWEI is a key component in the standoff between the nations.
HUAWEI is the largest global provider of telecoms equipment — many Western nations, including the U.S., already use its technologies. The company is now gearing up to roll out5Gnetwork infrastructure across the globe, but some nations havealready banned it.
The U.S.-HUAWEI battle escalated last week. The U.S.declared a national security emergencyregarding the threat posed by foreign tech companies, and put a block on HUAWEI’s U.S. deals. U.S. companies in China are nowsaid to be worriedabout how the nation will respond to the U.S. restrictions.
