WhatsApp finally lets you mute a contact or group forever
June 25, 2025
One of the most annoying things aboutWhatsAppis that you may’t mute a contact or group chat permanently, as the messaging app only lets you mute chats for eight hours, a week, or a year.
We got word earlier this year that WhatsApp was working to let you mute contacts and group chats forever, and it looks like the feature is finally rolling out to beta users now (replacing the option to mute a chat for a year). Frequent leakerWABetaInfospotted the new addition, noting that the always mute option is now available in version 2.20.201.10 of the app.

We can see the always mute option in version 2.20.201.9 of WhatsApp though, suggesting that you don’t necessarily need the latest version of the app to get the feature. It also suggests that this could be a server-side update. Nevertheless, these sorts of features tend to take a few days to reach everyone anyway.
This isn’t the only new addition rolling out to WhatsApp users, as the tipster reports that a redesigned storage management page is being pushed out as well. We can’t see it on version 2.20.201.9 or 2.20.201.10 of the app, so you might not want to hold your breath for this one just yet. The new storage management menu will offer a more granular look at what’s taking up space on your phone. Some of the more notable ways it does this is by showing large/forwarded files and suggesting files for deletion. But the legacy ability to view storage consumption by chat is still here too.
These latest additions join several other new features brought to WhatsApp in 2020, such asmore participantsin video/audio calls, advanced searchfunctionality, and adark mode.
